luo yang: girls

Bec executive produced and commissioned this short documentary on Luo Yang and her work. It looked at an iteration of the photographer’s on-going series ‘Girls’, in collaboration with Moonduckling Film and Shalini Kellinghaus. Luo’s series ‘Girls’ documented women coming of age in China, and this Dazed film saw Luo turn her lens on Thailand. Directed by Julien Colonna, the film weaves the voices of Luo and her subjects together, to challenge the gender binary and perceptions of femininity. Candid interviews between Luo and her subjects, are blended in a stream-of-consciousness manner to reveal Luo’s creative process, and how she uses her photography to get to the heart of the joys, trials and contradictions that are part of every person’s coming-of-age story. This film takes you inside the world of a woman who Ai Weiwei named one of the top rising stars in Chinese photography.
