Bec produced this short observational documentary Boys Don’t Cry with director Turkina Faso. Globally, across the various Dazed and Confused Magazine’s social media platforms, and the Russian platforms which ripped the content to repost in Russian territories, this film garnered millions of views. Turkina Faso, a Russian photographer and filmmaker, followed three young Russian men, who love wearing makeup, navigating their everyday lives in Moscow. In a country where the government aggressively withdraws rights for LGBTQIA+ people focusing on the simple fact of choosing to wear make-up, as a man, Turkina drew out a powerful narrative about how people in the Russian LGBTQIA+ community see and express themselves. Freedom to express yourself publicly can prove difficult in Moscow – makeup is equated with effeminacy, and consequently, homosexuality. Yet, despite the state’s determination to make life difficult for LGBTQIA+ people in Russia, this film is a testament to individuals finding a way to be themselves and attitudes are shifting.
