bala club
producer, development
This immersive film by Akinola Davies leads you to the dancefloor of London’s Bala Club – sometimes the only way to explain a club night is to bring you into it. In an editorial collaboration with Nowness which Bec Executive Produced and Commissioned, Dazed released a special episode of a series called Scenes — a series which gets up close and personal with some of the world’s most compelling musical communities. Despite the best efforts of boring councils and their heavy-handed licensing laws, nightlife still finds ways for innovation and reinvention, and the dancefloor of Bala Club shows you just how. Bala Club is run by a collective comprised of Chilean-British siblings, Kamixlo and Uli K, and their friends Endgame who is a producer, and MC BlazeKidd, who eschew definition. In one evening, you could have an hour of moody atmospheric tones followed by a cacophonous blend of whirring industrial noise, reggaetón, and then when you least expect it – a pop edit of Madonna’s 2000 hit “Music”. For that reason, it’s hard to pin down what Bala Club is, but in this experiential film does his best to show you.
