Without knowing why the Diary of an Italian Borderworker came to be or whose diary you are privy to, the contrasts present within each image get you. Strong hard lines – the soft smile of an old man; the word “SUPER” on a petrol pump, it’s cracked glass and disrepair; the piercing blue of a teenage boy’s eyes against his pale spotty skin; the strength of red clay stone, it’s cracks; a woman’s defiant stance amongst fluffy pink toys; soft bare skin and an exposed bald head; mountains dwarfing a little girls whose hair is red hotter than fire. The contrasts in the photographs seem to be comfortable in their existence, but the essence of the contrast sets up a relationship between two things based on a tension of ‘difference’. A Fabrizio says, he was interested in ‘every possible situation [with] a sort of tension’. This makes sense given that Albertini’s subject matter explores the constant of tension in being, as he puts it, ‘an everyday foreigner’.
